I finally called out a guy on my crew for buttering brick edges too thick

We were on a job in Nashville last Thursday and I watched him slap on almost an inch of mortar on every head joint before laying the brick. Does anyone else see this slowing down production way more than it helps?

Man I've laid some ugly brick joints in my time too.

The trick nobody talks about is the mortar consistency changing throughout the day as it sits in the sun. I've had joints look clean at 9am and look like garbage by 3pm because the mix dried out too fast. You ever try keeping a damp towel over your mortar board to slow that down?
