Took a $19/hr temp gig counting boxes at a mattress warehouse in Reno and it turned into the easiest winter of my life
About 14 months back I was between jobs and took a temp gig through a staffing agency doing inventory at a mattress warehouse outside Reno, and I figured it would be the most mind numbing thing ever. Turns out counting foam layers and logging them into a spreadsheet for 8 hours is weirdly calming, no customers, no phone calls, just me, a clipboard, and a scanner that beeps. The temp agency paid $19 an hour and the warehouse guys let me wear headphones, so I got through like 6 podcasts a shift. After a couple weeks they asked me to help reconcile the count against the system and I found a 340 unit gap from a shipping mix up, and the warehouse manager gave me a $150 gift card for catching it. I ended up staying five months and honestly it was the least stressed I have been in ages. The catch is you freeze your butt off in the loading dock area in winter, but the pay was steady and overtime was easy to grab. Curious if anyone else has done warehouse inventory work and whether the headphone thing is normal or if I just got lucky with that manager.
