Appreciation post: I took a $19 an hour night watchman gig at a storage lot in Reno just to pay rent, and I was wrong about it

That line about taking the gig "just to pay rent" hit me because that was me three years back with a graveyard security spot at a concrete plant. I figured it would be boring and I would hate every second, but it turned out to be the calmest job I ever had. Nobody bothers you at 3am, you get a ton of time to think, and I ended up reading like 40 books that year. The pay was bad but the peace was worth more than I gave it credit for. People talk down about night work like it is a dead end, but there is something about being alone with your thoughts that day jobs never give you. Glad you found that out too.
