Watched a guy at the Dayton book fair fix a cracked hinge with wheat paste in 10 minutes
I was at the Dayton book fair last Saturday and this older guy had a table in the back corner with a beat up 1920s dictionary. He showed me how he repairs a cracked hinge by brushing wheat paste into the joint with a thin strip of tissue, then setting it under weight. I had been using PVA on everything because that's what I learned from a YouTube video 2 years ago. He said PVA dries hard and pulls the boards apart over time, but wheat paste stays flexible and lets the paper move. Now I keep a jar of paste mixed in my shop and I've redone 6 books that way. Anyone here still use straight PVA on hinge repairs or did you all switch over?
