Tried using a 50/50 mix of PVA and methyl cellulose on some old maps, and the paper went totally wavy

Did you manage to get the waviness out?

Yeah, that mix can do that. Let it dry under some weight, like a stack of books. Next time, try a thinner layer of just methyl cellulose.
