This lady at the craft fair in Boise picked up my leather-bound journal and said, "Oh, it's just glued, not sewn, so it's not real bookbinding."

I mean, I spent like 15 hours on that thing, hand-tooling the cover and everything, and she just dismissed it in a second because I used a kettle stitch instead of some fancy exposed spine.

Yeah, read a blog post by a binder who said the "real bookbinding" debate is mostly about showing off. Like @wesleyjohnson said, it's still skill. That lady was just being a snob about a specific style. Your journal sounds solid.

Sounds like you're heading in the right direction. I had a similar experience where I just focused on making a journal that held together well and didn't worry about what anyone else called it. @henry_kelly54, those gatekeepers are usually just loud, not good.
