Guy at the bindery supply counter said PVA alone was fine for a 400 page rebind, and now the spine is cracking

He swore I did not need to add any paste to slow the drying, so I glued it up fast and the thing dried stiff as a board and popped apart at week 3. What mix do you all run for fat text blocks, or am I just asking too much of straight PVA?
