Bone folder snobbery nearly ruined my first leather cover

Last month I spent $40 on a fancy teflon folder because everyone online swore it was a must have. Then my coworker at the shop in Cincinnati handed me his scratched up plastic one from a $5 kit and said 'just try it.' I mean, the results were basically identical, and I've used his every day since. Anyone else feel like this hobby has a weird gear gatekeeping thing going on?

Gear gatekeeping is real! My $3 plastic folder works fine too.
