Why nobody talks about how book club arguments have gotten less personal over the years

Back in 2015, my old book club in Austin would get into real fights about character motives. Like, someone would say a hero was selfish and another person would take it as a personal attack. We'd leave the coffee shop mad at each other for days. Now with my current group, we all just nod and move on to the next book way too fast. I think online debates made us polite but also boring. Has anyone else noticed their club discussions feel less heated than they used to be?

Hang on - you actually left a coffee shop mad for days over a book argument? That's a whole new level of commitment I didn't think existed outside of sports rivalries. Most people I know barely remember what they argued about once the parking lot hits.

Mad for days over a book club argument? That's wild. I don't think I've cared that much about anything since high school.
