Warning: Our book club nearly split over whether to DNF a 700 page novel, and the library meeting room got loud
Two months ago our club picked a 700 page historical novel for the March meeting, and by page 200 four of the nine members wanted to quit it. We meet in the back room of a library in Boise, and a librarian actually came in to shush us because a guy named Ray was shouting that finishing a bad book is a waste of a life. What caught my attention was how the fight was not really about the book at all. Half the group felt quitting was a slap at the person who picked it, and the other half felt grinding through something you hate is just stubbornness. We ended up making a rule that anyone can call a DNF at the halfway point, and if two others agree we switch titles with no hard feelings. Does your club have a rule for quitting a book, or do you all just push through to the end?
