Thought allegory books were pretentious until my club picked The Grapes of Wrath
My book club voted on The Grapes of Wrath last spring and I rolled my eyes hard. Figured it was just some dusty old metaphor fest that college kids pretend to love. But by chapter 10 I was actually getting invested in the Joad family's rotten luck. Three meetings later and I'm the guy arguing that the turtle scene is the whole point of the book. Has anyone else had a classic they dismissed turn out to be better than the hype?

Tbh that chapter wrecked me too, but it also made the whole story finally click for me.
