That one book club meeting where everyone actually read the book... or did they?

Last Tuesday at our downtown library group, we debated whether a character's betrayal was justified. Half the room argued it was plot-driven, the other half called it lazy writing. But then I noticed three people flipping through summaries on their phones mid-discussion. Has anyone else caught members faking it and how do you handle it without calling them out?

my aunt once brought a grocery list into book club and nobody noticed until she asked if we thought the milk was spoiled.

Oh man, @tessa_roberts1 that reminds me of something that happened at my knitting circle last winter. One lady brought in her to-do list from work and read it out loud thinking it was the pattern instructions. We all sat there for twenty minutes nodding along while she mentioned spreadsheets and quarterly reviews. Finally someone asked about the yarn weight and she looked down at this crumpled sticky note and goes "oh no, that's the budget meeting notes." The milk story is funnier though because at least yours involved dairy. Now every time someone brings random papers to anything I just assume we're getting a grocery list update.
