Question about picking a book when half the group wants classics and half wants new stuff

Our book club in Austin has 8 people, and we've been stuck for months. Four members only want to read old books like 'Moby Dick' or 'Pride and Prejudice'. The other four only want recent bestsellers from the last couple years. We tried taking turns, but the classic folks said the new book felt 'empty' and the new book folks called the classic 'a slog'. Last month's vote ended in a 4-4 tie. Has anyone found a good book that can please both sides, or a better way to pick?

I used to think you had to pick one side, but a hybrid book changed my mind.

@the_zara has a solid suggestion with 'The Road', but I gotta say, calling it a "modern classic" feels off since it's only been out since 2006 lol. That book is pure fiction through and through, not really a hybrid at all. Hybrid books like 'World War Z' blend genres or formats, which is a whole different vibe than a straight novel.

Exactly! Try a modern classic, like 'The Road' maybe.
