Question about book club fights over stories with office life

Our group just read a book all about corporate culture... and it caused a big split. Some members loved how it let us talk about our own job highs and lows... felt like real talk. Others said book club should be an escape from daily grind... not another meeting. We lost a friend over this debate... which hurts. I get both sides but don't know how to fix it. What's your take? Do book clubs risk too much with career-focused reads?

Losing a friend over a book debate really stings. I'm totally guilty of stirring up drama myself, my book club once read a novel about office politics and I got so into it I accidentally recreated the plot at our next meeting! Here's my take: books about work can be great for real talk, but they need a safe space. If people just want to escape, maybe save those reads for another time. The risk is real if folks can't leave their job stress at the door. Honestly, it's all about knowing your group and picking books that bring you together, not tear you apart.

You know, I always thought work books were fine for any group until I saw your point about needing a safe space. @rowan666, that story about accidentally recreating the office politics plot is too real. It made me realize some topics hit way too close to home if people are just trying to relax with friends. Now I get why picking the right book really matters.

My friend's book club read "The Office" and... yeah, @wrenwilson gets it.
