Picked 'The Overstory' for my book club and it nearly broke us

We're a group of 8 in Portland and I thought the nature theme would be safe, but the 500 page length and slow start caused a mutiny. Half the group gave up after 100 pages, and the meeting turned into a fight about commitment. Has anyone else had a book club pick backfire this badly?

That "mutiny" sounds rough, but maybe the book's length itself was the real test of commitment, not the members.

Honestly, setting a super low daily page goal was the only thing that got me through some long books. Just committing to like, ten pages a day, made the whole thing feel less like a mountain to climb. Some days you blow past it, other days you just do the minimum, but you keep moving. That steady pace, without the pressure of finishing fast, stopped me from giving up. The length stops being scary when you break it into tiny, doable pieces.
