Our club's 1st meeting turned into a shouting match over one footnote

We were debating a historical novel in Austin and someone pulled a random page from their phone to 'prove' the author got a date wrong, and within 10 minutes two people were nearly crying. Now I enforce a no-outside-source rule and it's made every session way calmer. Has anyone else had a debate derail like that?
