Our club used to fight over one book a month, now we read 4 at once and nobody argues at all
Back in 2022 my club in Tulsa picked a single book and we'd argue about it for 3 hours straight. People got mad, someone quit over a Hanya Yanagihara take, and honestly those fights were the best part. Now we do a 'pick your own' format where everyone brings a different title, and meetings turned into a quiet show and tell. Last Tuesday 9 people showed up and I think I said maybe 4 words the entire time. Does your group actually debate anything anymore, or did it turn into a book report circle too?
I feel this. My group in Austin tried the same thing in 2023 and we went from 8 people yelling about Cormac McCarthy to 12 people politely nodding at their own separate books. The worst part was the snacks got fancy and the talk got shallow. We started losing the thing that made it fun, which was hearing why someone loved or hated a book enough to defend it for 45 minutes. So we did a hybrid: everyone reads the same book, but one person gets assigned to argue against it no matter what. That fixed it. We still argue, but now it's on purpose.
