Our club read 'The Great Gatsby' three years ago and again this month. The debate went from arguing about Daisy to arguing about Nick.

Heard a podcast once where someone pointed out how Gatsby's parties were basically the internet of the 1920s... everyone showing up but nobody really connecting.

5 bucks says half those people were just there for the free booze and the chance to complain about the host behind his back, same as how half my facebook friends just pop up to argue in the comments and then ghost for months. The host probably thought he was making real connections, but really he was just curating a crowd of strangers who'd forget his name by morning. Sounds like a party where the only thing louder than the jazz was the lack of actual conversation. Guess some things never change, right?
