Our book club nearly fell apart over the ending of 'The Silent Patient'.

We were at my house in Denver last Thursday, and the debate got so heated that Sarah actually left early. She felt the twist was cheap, while Mark argued it was brilliant foreshadowing. I had to step in and suggest we all write down our main points to share next time. Has anyone else had a meeting go this badly over a plot point?

Book clubs can survive a good fight over a book, Ben436. The key is to keep the talk about the story and not let it get personal. Setting up rules for debate, like writing points down, is a smart way to do that.

Oh man, my last book club dissolved over whether a character's motivation was believable. We're just not built for peace.

My cousin's wine tasting group imploded over a debate about corks versus screw tops.
