My book club's 'no spoilers' rule almost ruined a classic mystery

Our moderator swore we'd enjoy "The Silent Patient" more if we avoided discussing the twist, but after 3 weeks of vague hand-waving I just read ahead and told everyone the ending, and that made the real debate about whether the twist even worked start, so has anyone else had a group rule that backfired like this?
