My book club used to fight over picking books until we tried a new system last fall

For years, our group of eight people would just email suggestions and then argue for weeks. It was a mess. The tipping point was when we spent three meetings just talking about what to read next instead of the actual book. Last October, one member set up a simple online poll where we each got two votes. The book with the most votes won, no debate. We've read four books since then and haven't had a single fight. Has your group found a good way to pick books without the drama?

Honestly thought voting was too formal, but it totally saved our club too.

Right, who knew a little structure could be so clutch? I always figured voting was for student council nerds, but turns out it just stops one loud person from taking over. Guess we all learned something today.

Ugh, is it though? I mean congrats on not having a total dictator running your thing, but voting just means the loudest 51% get what they want instead. Like democracy is magic or something. People act like it solved world peace and not just that Kevin guy from accounting finally stopped talking over everyone. I get that it beats chaos, but let's not pretend it makes everything fair. It is just slightly more organized chaos with a paper trail.
