My book club picked a classic and it bombed. Next month we tried a debut novel and the debate was way better.

We read Moby-Dick and half the group just didn't finish it. Switched to a debut called Someone You Can Build a Nest In and everyone had opinions, the discussion went 90 minutes over. Has anyone else found newer books spark better conversations than the canon?

Did the people who didn't finish Moby-Dick even try to argue about it, or were they just quiet the whole time?

Thirty five people in my book club and eight of them actually cracked Moby-Dick. How many of your members had read the canon pick before you even started it?
