Last book club debate got heated over a single character's motivation

Our group was split on why the main character in the book left town. One guy insisted it was about revenge, but this older woman named Carol said no way, it was guilt over her sister. She pulled out a page from chapter 4 where the character mentions a dream and showed us how it linked back to a fight in chapter 2. That changed my whole take on the story. Anyone else had a debate where one person's evidence flipped the whole discussion?
