I used to judge the mom in our last book pick all wrong

In 'The Quiet Year', I saw the mother as cold for sending her kid away. Our book club had a big talk about her choices last meeting. A friend mentioned how her own mom did something similar during a tough patch. She brought up the part where the mom works double shifts to pay for school. That detail made me notice the sacrifice, not the distance. Now I feel she was doing her best with what she had. It really shifted how I read the whole story.

My uncle worked nights for years and we thought he was just avoiding family dinners. Turns out he was paying off my cousin's medical bills all along.

Respect his quiet sacrifice for his family.

What gets me is how these quiet acts shape family stories. @hugo50, your uncle's nights might have made your cousin feel left out back then. Now it's a different tale. Think about the guilt he carried, working while everyone slept. Or the relief when bills were paid. That kind of love changes a family forever.
