I finally hosted my first book club meeting and half the group quit over my pick
I picked The Overstory for our first meeting at my place in Boise last Tuesday and figured everyone would love it. Two people showed up having only read the first 40 pages, and one guy flat out said the book was boring and refused to talk about it. By the end of the night three people had texted the group chat saying they were done with the club because I "picked something too weird." I spent a week making snacks and putting together discussion questions for nothing. Has anyone else had a pick blow up like this, and how do you handle the group chat drama after?
Man, this is the same thing that happens at every potluck I've ever been to. One person brings a dish everybody loves and the next person brings something new and half the table won't touch it. People want to feel safe, not challenged, and a book club pick is basically a potluck dish. Next time put up three choices and let the group vote, then nobody can blame you when it goes sideways.
