I argued for 'The Road' but our club picked 'Station Eleven' and the discussion about hope in bleak stories totally shifted my view...
I was so sure our post-apocalyptic theme month needed McCarthy's brutal realism to feel authentic, but after our 90-minute talk last night where Sarah pointed out the persistent, quiet kindness in Mandel's book, I finally got why the group wanted that sliver of light.

Ninety minutes on whether a made up story about the end of the world has enough hope. Is that really a good use of your time?

You ever read that article about how these stories act like practice runs for real problems? Like betty_scott18's monster debate, it's less about the plot and more about working out how we feel. Arguing about hope in an end of the world movie is really arguing about what keeps people going when things get bad.

Right?! I spent an hour last week arguing about a movie monster's backstory.
