Hit 50 books in a year and it actually ruined reading for me

Last December I set a goal to read 50 books in 2024. Hit it last week with a short 200 page thriller. But honestly I was so focused on the number that I stopped enjoying the books. I skipped parts of longer novels just to move on. Started picking shorter books on purpose. My book club loved the idea of a challenge but I think I lost the fun of it. Has anyone else had a reading goal backfire like that?

Skipping parts of a book just to say you finished it kind of defeats the whole point of reading, doesn't it? Nobody's grading you on this, and if a challenge turns into something you dread, it's probably not worth chasing. Just pick up whatever you want and stop worrying about the number.

Ngl, skipping parts of longer novels just to hit a number is wild to me. That sounds more like a chore than something you actually wanted to do.
