Had a member call our book club picks "too safe" last meeting and it got me thinking

So we were at the library in Portland and this guy who joined said our last 5 book choices all follow the same pattern. He pulled out his phone and showed me. Every single pick was a bestseller under 300 pages by a white author. I actually checked and he was right. Now I gotta figure out if we should shake things up or keep doing what works. Anyone else had their book club called out like this?

lol "too safe" is a brutal way to put it but honestly he's not wrong. Reminds me of when my buddy's D&D group found out they'd only done dungeon crawls for like two years straight and it was just pure habit at that point. Maybe toss in a wildcard pick next time like a weird translated novella or something just to see what happens.

Does it ever bother you how comfortable we get with what works, even when we know there's probably something better out there? I used to defend my predictable choices, but you're right, sometimes we just need a random pick to shake things up.
