Found out reading cliff notes before book club actually makes discussions better

I was always the person who finished the book late or skimmed through parts and felt lost in our Tuesday night meetings. Last month my friend admitted she reads the cliff notes first to get the themes straight before diving in. Tried it with our latest pick about the Dust Bowl migration and I finally caught all the symbolism everyone else seemed to know. Anyone else do this or is it cheating in your group?

Oh COME ON, you're doing it BACKWARDS. The real pro move is reading the spoilers online, then using the book itself to spot all the little details the author snuck in that prove your theory right.

Oh geez, this is going to start a fight in my group too... I've been caught speed-reading the last few pages before the discussion actually starts, just to have something smart to say. Honestly, I think half the people in my group are faking it just as much as I am, we're all just too polite to call each other out.
