Caught myself skipping character arcs for 3 years

I was in my book club last Tuesday and someone asked why I hated a certain side character. I realized I had been skipping whole chapters about him because I thought they were boring filler. My friend pointed out that I missed the entire point of the redemption arc. Now I have to go back and re-read three books with fresh eyes. Has anyone else ever realized they were reading a book wrong the whole time?

Right? And just like that you're the guy at book club who hates a character for no real reason, classic. @the_dylan basically described my life with that wrong-guy chapters thing, except I did it for years instead of one book. At least now you can binge all three and pretend it's a totally new series, silver lining.

Once reread a whole book cause I skimmed the bad guy's chapters and missed all his reasons lol.
