That old trick with a piece of chalk on a flange face actually worked for me.
Was lining up a 14-inch steam line flange on a job last week and couldn't get the bolt holes to line up. Rubbed chalk on the high spots of the gasket face, bolted it up tight, and took it apart. The transfer showed exactly where to file. Anyone have a different method for spotting high spots on big flanges?

Yeah the chalk trick is a classic for a reason. Blue layout dye works too if you want something a bit more precise.
