Talking to an old pipefitter changed how I think about preheat.

Was on a job up in Gary last week. Old pipefitter named Sal. Been doing this since the 70s. He said I was wasting time with all that fancy induction heating gear. Told me he never preheated anything unless it was below freezing. Said the codes are for lawyers not welders. I argued with him but he showed me a crack repair he did 20 years back. Still holding. Got me wondering if we overdo the preheat on stuff like A36 where it's not really needed. Anyone else run into old timers who swear the book is too strict?

Salt probably just got lucky with that crack repair.
