Spent 4 hours chasing a leak on a boiler only to find a cracked gauge glass gasket I installed backwards
Kept pressure testing the whole shell and every fitting looked fine, so I finally pulled the sight glass off and saw the gasket was pinched flat on the wrong side. Cost me an entire Saturday afternoon plus a trip to the supply house in Tulsa for a $3 part. Anyone else got a dumb one like this that ate your whole day?
How'd you even manage to get that gasket in backwards without noticing it wasn't seating right? I'm asking because on those smaller sight glasses the lip is pretty obvious, but I've seen the bigger ones where both sides look almost the same if the rubber is worn. Did you have it apart earlier for cleaning and just slap it back together, or did it come that way from whoever worked on it last? Four hours of pressure testing points to you being pretty sure the shell was the problem, so what made you finally pull the glass? I've done the same thing with an o-ring on a pump flange, chased it for two hours before I flipped the thing over and saw the groove was cut wrong on one side.
