Question about hand beveling pipe vs. running it through the machine

Spent 12 days on a job in Gary last month beveling 6 inch schedule 40 by hand with a torch and grinder because the shop's beveling machine was down for a part. I've been doing this 17 years and forgot how much cleaner a machine cut is, the hand cuts had 3 or 4 spots the inspector made me dress up before he'd sign off. Back when I came up in the 90s we did almost everything by hand and you just lived with it, but watching the fitter fight those joints for two extra days made the case for me. The machine leaves a uniform land and root face, the torch wanders on you no matter how steady you hold it. I get that not every site has power or room for the machine, but for a shop job of that size there's no reason to do it the old way. Curious what you guys run for beveling on bigger pipe when the machine is out of commission.
