Overheard a foreman say 'stop chasing the weld puddle' and it finally clicked for me

I was working a 6-inch steam line repair at a paper mill outside Richmond last Tuesday. The foreman walked by my bay and just casually said, 'you're chasing the puddle, let it come to you, kid.' I had been fighting with a 7018 rod on an overhead joint for like 20 minutes. Took a breath, backed off the amps a hair, and just let the arc settle. First pass laid down way smoother than any of my previous tries. Anyone else have a random comment from an old hand that totally changed how you run a bead?

4 years ago I had a old pipefitter named Chuck tell me "you're fighting the steel, not welding it" while I was struggling with a 6G test coupon. That one sentence made me realize I was forcing the puddle instead of letting the arc do the work. Backed off, dropped my travel speed, and passed that test on the next try. It's crazy how one little phrase can just flip a switch in your head like that.

Well aren't you the lucky one, only took you 20 minutes to figure that out.
