Finally stopped shimming everything after one uneven base plate job

I used to think shims solved every misalignment till last month at a job in Gary. We spent 6 hours fighting a base plate that kept rocking no matter how many shims I stacked. Then the lead guy said stop, and had us cut a fresh plate instead. 20 minutes later it sat flat, no shims at all. Turns out I was treating the symptom, not the problem. Now I check flatness first before reaching for the shim bucket. Anyone else waste half a day on shims when a new plate would've fixed it faster?
