Can we settle this: do you torque your flange bolts in a star pattern or work around the circle?

Had a guy from Local 169 argue with me for 20 minutes at the Alcoa plant in Cleveland last Tuesday that going around the circle is just as good as a star pattern on a 24 bolt flange, and now I want to know what the rest of you were taught in your apprenticeship.
