Appreciation post: the journeyman who showed me how to read steam drum water level

I was about six months into my apprenticeship on a shutdown at a power plant outside Pittsburgh. This old journeyman named Hank pulled me aside after I kept second-guessing the sight glass, you know, thinking it was wrong. He took a coffee cup and a piece of tube from the scrap pile and walked me through the physics of it right there on the catwalk. Still sticks with me how patient he was, no yelling or nothing. Anyone else have a run-in with a vet that just clicked for you?

Buddy of mine had an old millwright show him how to read a micrometer with a cigarette in his mouth the whole time...

Wait, wasn't he worried about dropping ash on the spindle?
