A guy in Omaha told me my weld prep was all wrong for 1-inch plate

I was tacking up a big pressure vessel section and this older welder, Frank, walked by and said my bevel angle was way too shallow. He said at 30 degrees I was asking for lack of fusion in the root pass, and that for plate that thick I needed a tighter 22.5-degree bevel with a smaller land. I switched it up on the next joint and the X-ray came back clean. Anyone else had a basic technique they thought was fine until someone called them out on it?

Yeah that "bevel angle too shallow" thing... I ran into that on some 3/4 inch. My old boss saw my setup and just shook his head. Had me close it up to a real sharp angle and the difference was night and day.

Real sharp angle" is the key. Learned that the hard way too.

Actually it's more about the bevel angle being too wide.
