Rant: That guy who treats every game like a tournament final

At a meetup last month in Portland, this one dude spent 20 minutes arguing about a rule in Catan like his life depended on it. Three other players just sat there waiting while he flipped the rulebook back and forth. Has anyone else run into people who forget games are supposed to be fun?

I saw a guy at a bar last year completely lose it over a game of Scrabble. He spent 10 minutes arguing that "qi" was a made up word and stormed off when the dictionary proved him wrong. Meanwhile the rest of us just wanted to finish our beers and play another round. Some people just can't handle losing gracefully I guess.

People get so weirdly defensive about things that don't even matter, like they built their whole identity around being right about Scrabble rules. It's like that same guy is the one who argues about the proper way to load a dishwasher or insists his way of folding socks is objectively correct. You see it everywhere, from board games to which way the toilet paper roll faces. Sometimes I wonder if people just can't handle being wrong about anything, no matter how small. That guy probably went home and told everyone about the "idiots" who don't know real words, completely missing the point.
