My group's Monopoly games went from 4 hours to 90 minutes and the fix was swapping in a 15 sided die
We played the same beat up 2003 copy every Friday at my place in Akron for about 2 years. Every game dragged past midnight and someone always quit mad. Then my buddy Dan brought a d15 from his D&D bag and made us roll it instead of two d6. Suddenly you land on properties way less often and games wrap in about 90 minutes. It sounds dumb but the math nerd in our group said the odds get flatter and it kills the long tail. Now we actually finish 3 games a night. Anyone else mess with dice to fix game length or are we just weird?
My cousin in Toledo tried something like this after reading a post on BoardGameGeek about dice odds in Monopoly. The guy who wrote it said the normal two d6 roll makes 7 the most common number by far, so everyone keeps landing on the same few spots and nobody ever goes deep into the board. Swapping to one big die spreads the chances out way more even across all the numbers. I showed it to my Thursday group and we went from 3 hour slogs to finishing in about an hour and a half too. The weird part is nobody fights over the good spots as much because you can't count on rolling a 7 anymore. It really does change how the whole game feels. Your Dan guy was onto something lol.
