My friend kept telling me to read the rulebook first. I owe him an apology

For like 3 years I always skimmed the rulebook and jumped straight into teaching games. My friend Dave kept saying read the whole thing twice, but I thought he was just being slow. Then last month I tried to run a 2-player game of Agricola at the shop in Eugene and skipped the harvest phase twice, the game took 4 hours instead of 90 minutes. Now I spend 20 minutes prepping any new game and Dave was right. Has anyone else found a habit you thought was overkill that actually saved your game night?
