My friend in Seattle told me to skip the 'Settlers of Catan' starter set and go straight for 'Terraforming Mars'
He said it was a better fit for my group, who likes complex stuff. I bought it, and our first game night was a total mess that lasted five hours because nobody knew what they were doing. Should I have just stuck with the basic gateway game everyone talks about?

My buddy did the same thing with Twilight Imperium. He told his group they were ready for a "real" game, and they spent the entire Saturday just trying to figure out the rulebook. They never even finished a full round.

Takes a LOT of faith to jump into a game that complex blind. Life's full of that trap.

That's the classic Twilight Imperium experience right there. My group spent three hours just setting up the board and arguing about the trade rules. We called it a day after someone's fleet got wiped by a card we all forgot existed.
