Just realized the local game store is worth the drive

I always bought my board games online because it was cheaper and easier. But last Saturday I stopped into The Dice Den in Portland because my wife wanted to grab coffee next door. Walked in and saw a group of six people testing out a game I'd been curious about for months. The owner let me sit in for 10 minutes and explained a rule I'd been reading wrong online. I ended up buying the game right there for $52 which is only 4 bucks more than Amazon. The experience of trying before buying and getting real advice from people who play daily changed my mind completely. Has anyone else had a store clerk talk you into a game you would have skipped otherwise?

lol the Dice Den is a total black hole for my wallet. I swear that guy with the beard talked me into buying Root once and I still haven't figured out how to play it right. The free demo thing is smart though, I walked out with Cascadia last month cause the owner just handed me a controller and said try this. Online shopping is cheaper til you realize you've wasted 30 bucks on a dud you hate.

That bearded guy at Dice Den got me too with Root, I think I’ve played it twice and still don’t know what I’m doing. For me, I started watching a couple of playthrough videos on YouTube before I buy anything now, saved me from a few 40 dollar duds. Also, I ask the staff for their top 3 easy to learn games and pick the one that looks coolest, worked great when I grabbed Wingspan last year cause the guy just said it’s like bird bingo but way deeper. Online is cheaper until you stare at a rulebook for an hour and give up.
