I used to think playing a game once was enough to judge it, but a third play of 'Root' last weekend completely flipped my view.
After my group finally got the hang of the different factions, the whole game opened up and felt totally different, so how many plays do you usually need before you feel like you've really seen what a game can do?

Yeah, that third play is key, like mason283 said.

My buddy tried a new game last week and quit after one play, then complained it was boring. I told him he basically only watched the trailer for a movie and called it the whole story.

Three plays is usually the bare minimum for me. You miss all the strategy and player interaction on the first couple tries. That's when a game actually starts to feel complete.
