Watched a guy at the Puyallup fair forge weld with his eyes closed, sort of
Stopped by the demo tent at the Puyallup fair last month and this old smith named Ray was doing a chain link weld. Someone in the crowd asked how he knows when it's ready and he said he watches the flux bubble and listens for the hiss instead of trusting color in daylight. I tried his trick on my coal forge at home and my weld took on the first try after months of cold shuts. Anyone else here go by sound or flux instead of eyeballing the heat?
