Watch out for that new 'fast quench' oil from the hardware store in Springfield
Grabbed a gallon last month for some leaf springs, figured it was just regular stuff. Tempered a batch of six knives and every single one cracked at the tang, lost about $400 in steel and time. The label says it's for 'general forging' but it's way too aggressive, acts more like water. Anyone else run into this junk or have a go-to brand that's actually reliable?

Maybe you just overheated the steel before the quench.

Saw a thread on a blacksmithing forum last week warning about that exact brand. A few guys said it ruined their springs and they had to switch back to Parks 50 or even just old motor oil. That fast quench label seems like a total lie, it's basically unregulated. What did the store say when you told them?
