The penny test for anvils actually blew my mind

I was watching a video from that old smith up in Vermont, and he said you can check an anvil's rebound by dropping a penny on it. Had to try it on my beat up 150 pounder, and the penny bounced back almost 3 inches. Anybody else ever do this and get different results with different anvils?

Tried it on a beat up Fisher anvil I picked up at a flea market and the penny barely came off the face. Pretty sure that thing has been through a war or two.

Is a little surface rust really that big a deal on an old anvil?
