Shoutout to the old guy at the scrap yard who told me to try a different steel

I was making a set of fire pokers and grabbed some rebar like I always do. This guy saw me loading it and said, 'Kid, that stuff's junk for that. Try a piece of that old leaf spring over there.' I cut a piece, forged it out, and the difference was night and day. It held a point way better and the twist I put in it stayed sharp. Anyone else have a scrap source tip that really worked out?

Got any other good spots to check for leaf spring steel? I mean, besides the obvious scrap yards.

It's wild how much hidden knowledge is out there in random places. You just need someone willing to share it, like that old guy. Makes you wonder what else we're doing the hard way.

Try old truck repair shops, they often have spares.
