Question about using rebar for tongs...

Thought I'd save $50 and forge my own set of tongs from rebar I found behind my shop, but after 3 hours of heating and hammering all I got was a twisted mess that snapped on the first grab.

Tried the same shortcut before, feels like everything costs more when you buy cheap.

The real trap is that cheap stuff makes you think you're saving when you're actually just spreading the cost out over time. With that first purchase you pay less up front but then you keep paying in repairs, replacements, and frustration. Most people don't add up all those small costs later. The worst part is that you end up buying the same thing twice or three times before you finally get the good one. That adds up to way more than if you just bought right the first time.
